Blue Cross Blue Shield supports Legal Aid with lead corporate gift
(Raleigh, NC) - Legal Aid of North Carolina announced today that it has received a pledge of $30,000 for its Access to Justice Campaign from Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina (BCBSNC).
The BCBSNC gift is one of the largest single-year gifts that Legal Aid has received in its campaign, which is starting its second year this month. The Access to Justice Campaign has secured over $500,000 in pledges and donations from lawyers in the Triangle in the first year of the campaign.
The gift from BCBSNC is the first major corporate gift to the campaign. Pursuing corporate support represents an important new element in Legal Aid’s overall approach to philanthropy.
A.P. Carlton, Jr., Chairperson of Legal Aid’s Campaign, who is with the Allen and Pinnix law firm in Raleigh and who is Past President of the American Bar Association, noted that although Legal Aid serves the economically most vulnerable households, it defied the stereotypical welfare program. “The vast majority of LANC clients—comprising 35% of the state’s population—are,” he emphasized, “employed and hardworking, corporate customers as well as employees.” “When Blue Cross had all the facts,” Carlton said, “they quickly understood the importance of LANC’s work. They see their gift as part of their corporate responsibility to the community as well as a good investment.”
“We’re extremely pleased, Carlton added, “that a company of the stature of Blue Cross Blue Shield has taken a leadership role in support of this important campaign.”
Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina is a recognized leader in delivering innovative health care products, services, and information. It has more than 3.7 million members, including over 900,000 served by other Blue Plans. For 75 years, the company has offered health insurance at a competitive price and has served the people of North Carolina through support of community organizations, programs, and events that promote good health. Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina is an independent licensee of the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association.
Legal Aid of North Carolina is a statewide, nonprofit law firm that provides free legal services in civil matters to eligible households in all 100 counties in North Carolina through its 24 offices and its special projects. LANC annually serves about 25,000 clients.
