Firm Partner Named Elon’s Distinguished Alumnus of the Year
Elon University has named Noel L. Allen, a founding partner of Allen and Pinnix, P.A., as its Distinguished Alumnus of the Year.
The award is presented to an alumnus who has distinguished himself in a profession and in the community and brought honor to Elon University.
In the nearly four decades since his graduation, Allen has become one of the nation’s preeminent attorneys and legal scholars, distinguishing himself in his profession and in service to Elon University.
As a member of the University’s Board of Trustees since 1985, including two terms as board chair, Allen played a pivotal role in the board’s decision to open the Elon University School of Law and serves on its board of advisors.
Allen’s professional accomplishments have earned him recognition in The Best Lawyers in America, North Carolina Super Lawyers, and in Business North Carolina magazine as one of the state’s “Legal Elite.”
Allen serves as U.S. editor of the multi-volume Competition Law of Western Europe and The United States and is the author of North Carolina Unfair Business Practice and Antitrust Law in North Carolina.
Allen and Pinnix Attorney Participates in NPO Conference
Allen and Pinnix Partner A. P. Carlton, participated in a professional development conference for more than one-hundred certified public accountants (CPA’s) with RMS McGladrey.
Carlton, the first outside speaker invited to participate in this conference, focused on Non-Profit Organizations (NPO’s) and on Corporate Governance, the legal duties of officers and directors, and the roles of board and management.
Carlton, who is on Business North Carolina’s Legal Elite list, is nationally known for his work in regulatory, financial and non-profit law.
He served as ABA president in 2002-2003 and has received numerous awards including recognition as a National “Banking Super Lawyer” by Super Lawyers magazine. Early in his career, he was a law partner with former Governor and US Senator Terry Sanford and former Governor James Holshouser. Carlton is the founding counsel for the NC Community Foundation. He also has extensive experience in complex business transactions and corporate governance.

National Super Lawyers is a listing of outstanding lawyers from more than 70 practice areas who have attained the heighest high degree of peer recognition and professional achievement
The selection is based on a nomination process, peer evaluation and review by a distinguished panel.
Factors considered in seclection are transactions, representative clients, honors and awards, Bar and other professional activity, as well as pro bono and community service.
Carlton, a past-president of the American Bar Association, specializes in regulatory, financial, and non-profit law.
Area Magazine Recognizes Firm and Partner
Triangle Business Leader has named Allen and Pinnix as a “Top Law Firm” in the Triangle area. 41 area firms, most of which are much larger than Allen and Pinnix, were chosen for this recognition.
Founding Partner Noel Allen was selected as a “2008 Impact Law Leader.” 24 attorneys were recognized by the magazine as having made a significant difference in their practice areas and having had a substantial influence on the business community.
According to the magazine, an “Impact Law Leader” has demonstrated significant legal accomplishment and has been an active participant in civic or philanthropic groups in the community.
The judges are regional entrepreneurs, business leaders, and prominent academic and civic leaders as well as Triangle Business Leader editorial staff.
Capital City Club elects new members to Board of Directors
Sheila H. Ogle chair of the Capital City Club Board of Directors has announced that A. P. Carlton, Jr. has joined the Board.
Established in 1979, the Capital City Club is Raleigh's oldest business club. Its membership consists of over 2400 of Wake County's leaders in Government, Law, Industry, Business and Education.
Carlton, a founding member of the City Club, will initially serve a 2-year term of office.

Pinnix Wins AILA Service Excellence Award
The American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA) has awarded Raleigh attorney John L. Pinnix its prestigious AILA Service Excellence Award. Pinnix is only the second attorney to receive the award, which is given in “Recognition of Outstanding Volunteer Service in Advancing the Mission, Development and Value AILA for its Members and the Public It Serves.”
At a ceremony during AILA’s Annual Conference in Vancouver, Canada, AILA noted that “Pinnix has served the American Immigration Lawyers Association for nearly three decades. He is a passionate leader who brings a deep commitment to grassroots advocacy to AILA and who helped lead and shape AILA’s growing advocacy efforts beginning in the late 1980s and through the challenges of the 90s and into the 21st century. Pinnix has served on AILA’s Board of Governors since 1993. His term as national AILA President saw the abolition of the Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) and the establishment of the new Department of Homeland Security. His priorities as AILA president included strengthening the Association’s advocacy efforts and encouraging the pro bono efforts of AILA members.”
Blue Cross Blue Shield supports Legal Aid
with lead corporate gift
Legal Aid of North Carolina announced today that it has received a pledge of $30,000 for its Access to Justice Campaign from Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina (BCBSNC).
The BCBSNC gift is one of the largest single-year gifts that Legal Aid has received in its campaign, which is starting its second year this month. The Access to Justice Campaign has secured over $500,000 in pledges and donations from lawyers in the Triangle in the first year of the campaign.
The gift from BCBSNC is the first major corporate gift to the campaign. Pursuing corporate support represents an important new element in Legal Aid’s overall approach to philanthropy.
A.P. Carlton, Jr., Chairperson of Legal Aid’s Campaign, who is with the Allen and Pinnix law firm in Raleigh and who is Past President of the American Bar Association, noted that although Legal Aid serves the economically most vulnerable households, it defied the stereotypical welfare program. “The vast majority of LANC clients—comprising 35% of the state’s population—are,” he emphasized, “employed and hardworking, corporate customers as well as employees.” “When Blue Cross had all the facts,” Carlton said, “they quickly understood the importance of LANC’s work. They see their gift as part of their corporate responsibility to the community as well as a good investment.”

A. P. Carlton, Jr., a past president of the American Bar Association, has joined the Allen and Pinnix law firm here. Carlton, who is on Business North Carolina’s Legal Elite list, is nationally known for his work in regulatory, financial and non-profit law.

International currency broker retains Allen and Pinnix law firm
The currency broker, FXDirect Dealer, a subsidiary of the Swiss company Compagnie Financier Tradition, has retained the Allen and Pinnix law firm to represent the company with federal legislation regulating currency markets.
The announcement was made by Noel Allen, managing partner of the firm, who said, “We are pleased with this new client. Our firm is experienced in regulatory law and we look forward to this relationship with a company that has international ties around the world.” A.P. Carlton, Jr., a past president of the American Bar Association and partner of Allen and Pinnix, will be the lead attorney for the new client. Allen and Pinnix has been recognized for its work in regulatory, antitrust, immigration and international law.
